The Great Gatsby: Chapter 5

CHAPTER 5 - COMPLICATION

- After coming home from a date with Jordan, Nick is surprised to see Gatsby's house lit up so brightly.
- Nick is startled as Gatsby jumps out at him and Gatsby seems desperate to make Nick happy offering him a swim in his pool, Gatsby then asks for a favour from Nick which was to arrange a meeting with Daisy for him.
- In excitement  Gatsby offers to pay Nick for arranging a meeting with Daisy for him, Nick gets quite offended over this and declines the offer.
- The day of the meeting, Gatsby's body language shows that he is incredibly nervous of meeting Daisy.
- When he firsts meets Daisy, the conversation is incredibly awkward, it is also noted that it had started to rain.
- Nick then has to leave for 30 minutes but when he returns the rain had stopped and the sun had come out, he walks in to find Gatsby seemingly very happy and they are both getting along very well.

How the story is told

- In clumsiness and nervousness, Gatsby almost knocks over Nicks clock, this symbolises that Gatsby wants to stop time to try and retrieve the past.

- The use of pathetic fallacy to symbolise the emotions felt during the conversation, raining when awkward then the sun comes out to symbolise that everything between them is ok.

- The story is told so that Gatsby is no longer this decident living man, Nick describes Gatsby as being all love struck and nervous showing that Gatsby, although his rich traits, is the same as the rest of the characters.
