CHAPTER 4 - ORIENTATION
- Nick talks about all the people who had attended Gatsby's parties, he talks about how many of them are wealthy.
- Gatsby takes Nick for lunch in New York, Gatsby tells Nick about his past and Nick doesn't know whether to believe him or not.
- When travelling back to West Egg, Gatsby gets caught by police for speeding, however when the policemen goes to the car window Gatsby shows the policemen a white card and the policemen apologises. .
- Nick is introduced to Meyer Wolfsheim who claims to of fixed the 1919 world series
-Wolfsheim gives Nick the impressions that the source of Gatsby's wealth may be corrupt.
- Nick then meets up with Jordan who recalls having a convosation with Gatsby about him being in love with Daisy. She then tells Nick about how Gatsby and Daisy were in love however when Gatsby went to war they never seen each other again.
How is the story told?
- The chapter is used to add mystery behind Gatsby's background, Fritz does this through Gatsby telling Nick his past and also through the use of dual narrative in where you hear other characters opinion on Gatsby and their rumours.
- At the start of the chapter Gatsby is said to of been sitting in a car, this is the only time Fritzgald mentions Gatsby to be in a car, this could foreshadow Myrtle's death as he is the one who's blamed to of killed her.
- Because of the introduction of Meyer Wolfsheim it adds controversy to the story line, because he has links to within the criminal industry in New York this now changes Nick's perception on him and the way the story is told because now Nick is more suspicious towards Gatsby.
