Practice question: Section B

Write about the significance of the ways the

three writers you have studied have used
places in their narratives.

In this essay I shall be talking about the significance of how writers use places and setting in their novel, the 3 writers I shall be looking at are Robert Frost, Robert Browning and Khaleed Hosseini. One use of setting all three writers use is that they use weather in order to create meaning around the plot and also to symbolise, for example in Robert Brownings 'The Last Patriot' the rain symbolises the patriot  being washed of his sins before he is about to be hung.

The first author we'll be analysing is Khaleed Hosseini, we'll be looking into how she uses setting in her most popular novel 'The Kite Runner'. The Kite Runner is based within 2 countries, one of the home of author and main character, Afghanistan. The other setting is used later in the novel which is America. Hosseini uses both settings to symbolises different emotions for main character Amir, whilst living in Afghanistan, Hosseini wanted the country to represent the destruction of Amirs relationship between both of his father and his best friend Hassan, Hosseini does this by making the climax (Hassans rape) happen in Afghanistan to show the reader that this is now where the place where Amir would feel most uncomfortable returning to. When Amir moves to America with his father, Amir believes he leaves all of his guilt behind in Afghanistan, the move to America symbolises a fresh start for Amir as he believes he is away from all of his guilt and can now build a life around America. However, an alternative intepretation the move to america could symbolise Amir coming to terms with the guilt and being able to face it which is the reason why he went back to save Hassans son.
Hosseini also uses pathetic fallacy to help the reader understand Amir's guilt, for example when Hassan is raped Hosseini describes the event to fall into 'the winter of 1979' the winter is usually thought to be dark and cold, which symbolises the darkness of the event. The reason why Hosseini may of used
