Robert Frost

Out,Out

"The buzz saw snarled and rattled in the yard" - Animal imagery
Language " sweet scented stuff" juxtposes against the events about to happen.
Iambic pentameter
The use of ceasurea's - reminds the reader that it's a story
"He must have given the hand" saying it's almost the boys fault for the accident.
"Little - less - nothing!" Pace and rhythm reflects the heart beat, get slower until the boy finally dies.
"Little - less - nothing!" The use of exclamation mark suggests shock however it sounds quite sarcastic, nobody cares.
Objective narrative.

Stopping by the woods on a snowy evening

Rhyming structure goes AABA until final stanza where it is AABB
"Whose woods these are I think I know" the narrator believes he feels comfortable within the woods.
"And miles to go before I sleep" repetition of this sentence could show that the narrator is dying, or he could be making a journey.
Use of a steady rhythm called tetrameter, like the steps of making a journey.

Robert Browning

My Last Duchess

- The title suggests that the duke believed the duchess was his posession using the language 'my', also the word 'last' suggests that he's keen on marrying again and that he's had plenty of other ex-duchesses.
- Person speaking is the duke of ferrera.
- Iambic pentameter throughout the poem.
- "The depth and passion of it's earnest glance" personification of the picture.
- The use of brackets is the the Duke of Ferrara's thoughts.
-  Rhetorical question " Much the same smile?" showing the Dukes insecurity and power.
- "Spot of Joy" When the duchess was happy the duke would call it the spot of joy, showing the Dukes reflecting on her - also showing his obsession with her.
- Setting used to show the wealth of the Duke however juxtaposes with his insecure personality.
- " Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands" Use of full-stop describes the death of the duchess." also the word there should be their however now it's not so that means that the ex-duchess is no longer his posession.
- Structure of poem helps reveal the secrets of him getting rid of the duchess, for example  " Then all smiles stopped together. There she stands" is situated at the end of the first page, it is the first hint of him getting rid of the duchess, the structure shows that the Duke is slowly cracking under his fake personality.
- The duke is not a reliable narrator as the reader is only seeing it from his point of view which may not be the right view to beloieve.
- Intepretations - the poem is used to show how controlling and powerful the Duke is OR It is showing how insecure the Duke is.

Practice question: Section B

Write about the significance of the ways the

three writers you have studied have used
places in their narratives.

In this essay I shall be talking about the significance of how writers use places and setting in their novel, the 3 writers I shall be looking at are Robert Frost, Robert Browning and Khaleed Hosseini. One use of setting all three writers use is that they use weather in order to create meaning around the plot and also to symbolise, for example in Robert Brownings 'The Last Patriot' the rain symbolises the patriot  being washed of his sins before he is about to be hung.

The first author we'll be analysing is Khaleed Hosseini, we'll be looking into how she uses setting in her most popular novel 'The Kite Runner'. The Kite Runner is based within 2 countries, one of the home of author and main character, Afghanistan. The other setting is used later in the novel which is America. Hosseini uses both settings to symbolises different emotions for main character Amir, whilst living in Afghanistan, Hosseini wanted the country to represent the destruction of Amirs relationship between both of his father and his best friend Hassan, Hosseini does this by making the climax (Hassans rape) happen in Afghanistan to show the reader that this is now where the place where Amir would feel most uncomfortable returning to. When Amir moves to America with his father, Amir believes he leaves all of his guilt behind in Afghanistan, the move to America symbolises a fresh start for Amir as he believes he is away from all of his guilt and can now build a life around America. However, an alternative intepretation the move to america could symbolise Amir coming to terms with the guilt and being able to face it which is the reason why he went back to save Hassans son.
Hosseini also uses pathetic fallacy to help the reader understand Amir's guilt, for example when Hassan is raped Hosseini describes the event to fall into 'the winter of 1979' the winter is usually thought to be dark and cold, which symbolises the darkness of the event. The reason why Hosseini may of used

Practice exam question: Section A q1

How is the story told in chapter 5?

Chapter 5 is part of the complication within the novel, the reason is that Nick has arranged a meeting between Nick and Daisy and although Daisy is still is in a relationship with Tom they both fall for each other. One main technique used to tell the story in chapter 5 is the use of pathetic fallecy.

The use of pathetic fallacy in this chapter allows the reader to understand the emotions felt by both Nick and Daisy during their meeting. At the start of the chapter Nick says "the day agreed upon was pouring rain" I beleive Fritzgald used the weather to foreshadow the type of response Gatsby and Daisy have on each other when they meet because once they do it is really awkward. Another intepretation of the rain would be that it symbolises the emotion felt by Gatsby because at the time Nick says this. Gatsby is showing that he is obviously nervous as he offers to send a gardner to cut Nicks grass. After Nick leaves both Daisy and Gatsby to talk, he returns 30 minutes later to find that the shower of rain had dissapareared and has been replaced by the sun. When Nick walks into the room, he describes the room as "the room is filled with twinkle bells of sunlight" the use of the language twinkle bells could be used to reflect Gatsby's mood. Another intepretation of the word 'twinkle bells' is that the use of language sounds quite magical which Fritzgald may be showing that their relationship is much more magical compared to Daisy's with Tom.

Another narrative technique used by Fritzlgald is the use of symbolism. Before the meeting with Daisy, Gatsby is really feeling uncomftertable and nervous, whilst talking to Nick for advice, he accidently knocks over Nicks clock. When Gatsby knocks over Nicks clock this symbolises that Gatsby wants to try and stop time because he is feeling too nervous and doesn't want to face Daisy, another interpretation would be that Gatsby wants to stop time to try and reverse time so he can go back to when himself and Daisy were in a relationship.

Whilst Gatsby is incredibly nervous before his meeting with Daisy, Nick repeatedly descibes how Gatsby is using his money to try and cover the fact that he is an normal guy, for example Gatsby says to Nick (QUOTE WHEN GATSBY OFFERS NICK TO GET SOMEBODY TO CUT HIS LAWN). I believe that Gatsby offers this Nick because he feels that he's under a situation he hasn't been under before because usually he would use his money to fix those problems, another intepretation would be that Nick wants to tell the audience through dialouge that Gatsby is actually an ordinary man although he lives such a decident lifestlye, Fritzgald shows this by using Nick to express Gatsby's nervousness and how he's trying to cover up the fact he's nervous by offering money to Nick.

In conclusion I believe that Fritzgald tells the story using pathetic fallacy to show the emotion felt between Gatsby and Daisy during their meeting, this allows the audience to percieve their relationship as being slowly repaired. Fritzgald also uses symbolism to also dig deeper into what Gatsby may be feeling during the time of the meeting as this allows the audience to understand how nervous Gatsby is as a character although he puts on such a heroic lifestlye. Finally Fritzgald uses the narrator (Nick) to help show that Gatsby is a normal man although he tries to hide it by using he wealth.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 7

CHAPTER 7 - COMPLICATION

- After finding out that he cannot rekindle his love for Daisy, Gatsby calls of his parties which were used to lure in Daisy in the first place.

- Nick describes the day as being the hottest day in summer.

- Gatsby finds out about Daisy's baby.

- Gatsby asks if Daisy would like to go into the city, this is where Tom finally finds out about their love affair.

- During the trip into the city, Tom learns that Wilson know that Myrtle has been cheating on somebody but he does not know their identity.

- During a meal, Tom confronts Gatsby of calling people old sport, he then goes on about how Gatsby never attended Oxford and asks about his relationship with Daisy, to which Gatsby replies that they both love each other.

-Driving back to Long island, Nick discovers that somebody had been hit by a car on the border of the valley of ashes.

-They soon find out that Myrtle was the victim.

-Tom then blames Gatsby and Daisy of running her over and tells Wilson.

How is the story told?

- When Nick describes how it is the hottest day of the year, he is foreshadowing that the day ahead will be full of events such as Myrtle's death. The heat represents the rising tension towards the climax.

- This chapter mirrors chapter 1 as they all go for a trip to new york and also pass through the valley of ashes. Maybe Fritz done this to show why Nick used past tense in the first chapter, also why he was judging Gatsby so critically because he has the thought that Gatsby ran Myrtle over.

- Fritz uses the theme of a hidden identity of who ran over Myrtle which really helps make Nick change his perception on all the characters, he wonders who must of done such a thing and beleives that it could of been Gatsby and starts to why.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 6

CHAPTER 6 - COMPLICATION

-The rumors about Gatsby continue to circulate in New York—a reporter even travels to Gatsby’s mansion hoping to interview him.

- Nick sees neither Gatsby nor Daisy for several weeks after their reunion at Nick’s house. Stopping by Gatsby’s house one afternoon, he is alarmed to find Tom Buchanan there.

- Tom is already very suspicious of both Daisy and Gatsby as Daisy has been visiting Gatsby several times in the last week.
The following Saturday night, Tom and Daisy go to a party at Gatsby’s house.

Gatsby seeks out Nick after Tom and Daisy leave the party; he is unhappy because Daisy has had such an unpleasant time. Gatsby wants things to be exactly the same as they were before he left Louisville: he wants Daisy to leave Tom so that he can be with her.

Nick reminds Gatsby that he cannot re-create the past. Gatsby, distraught, protests that he can. He believes that his money can accomplish anything as far as Daisy is concerned

How the story is told?

- The chapter is told to explore the topic of social class, through the use of the rumours the audience will understand that Gatsby wasn't always rich, he had to work for his ambitions however when Nick reminds Gatsby that he cannot re-create his relationship with Daisy, Gatsby rejects and states that he can through the use of his class and money, this shows that Nicks first intentions of Gatsby were right about him being arrogant, this could show that Nick is a reliable narrator.

- The green light which is situated at Daisy house is mentioned in this chapter, the green light represents money and this might tell the reader that their relationship is spurred on by money, however when Gatsby realizes that there relationship will never be the same the green light goes out.

- Nick tells the reader about how Gatsby made his money by working for a man called Dan Cody. Fritzgald uses Cody to represent that the 1920's is not longer a place in where self-made men like Cody and Nick cannot thrive, instead there are borders such as west and east egg.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 5

CHAPTER 5 - COMPLICATION

- After coming home from a date with Jordan, Nick is surprised to see Gatsby's house lit up so brightly.
- Nick is startled as Gatsby jumps out at him and Gatsby seems desperate to make Nick happy offering him a swim in his pool, Gatsby then asks for a favour from Nick which was to arrange a meeting with Daisy for him.
- In excitement  Gatsby offers to pay Nick for arranging a meeting with Daisy for him, Nick gets quite offended over this and declines the offer.
- The day of the meeting, Gatsby's body language shows that he is incredibly nervous of meeting Daisy.
- When he firsts meets Daisy, the conversation is incredibly awkward, it is also noted that it had started to rain.
- Nick then has to leave for 30 minutes but when he returns the rain had stopped and the sun had come out, he walks in to find Gatsby seemingly very happy and they are both getting along very well.

How the story is told

- In clumsiness and nervousness, Gatsby almost knocks over Nicks clock, this symbolises that Gatsby wants to stop time to try and retrieve the past.

- The use of pathetic fallacy to symbolise the emotions felt during the conversation, raining when awkward then the sun comes out to symbolise that everything between them is ok.

- The story is told so that Gatsby is no longer this decident living man, Nick describes Gatsby as being all love struck and nervous showing that Gatsby, although his rich traits, is the same as the rest of the characters.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 4

CHAPTER 4  - ORIENTATION

- Nick talks about all the people who had attended Gatsby's parties, he talks about how many of them are wealthy.
- Gatsby takes Nick for lunch in New York, Gatsby tells Nick about his past and Nick doesn't know whether to believe him or not.

- When travelling back to West Egg, Gatsby gets caught by police for speeding, however when the policemen goes to the car window Gatsby shows the policemen a white card and the policemen apologises.  .
- Nick is introduced to Meyer Wolfsheim who claims to of fixed the 1919 world series

-Wolfsheim gives Nick the impressions that the source of Gatsby's wealth may be corrupt.

- Nick then meets up with Jordan who recalls having a convosation with Gatsby about him being in love with Daisy.  She then tells Nick about how Gatsby and Daisy were in love however when Gatsby went to war they never seen each other again.

How is the story told?

- The chapter is used to add mystery behind Gatsby's background, Fritz does this through Gatsby telling Nick his past and also through the use of dual narrative in where you hear other characters opinion on Gatsby and their rumours.

- At the start of the chapter Gatsby is said to of been sitting in a car, this is the only time Fritzgald mentions Gatsby to be in a car, this could foreshadow Myrtle's death as he is the one who's blamed to of killed her.

- Because of the introduction of Meyer Wolfsheim it adds controversy to the story line, because he has links to within the criminal industry in New York this now changes Nick's perception on him and the way the story is told because now Nick is more suspicious towards Gatsby.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 3

CHAPTER 3 - ORIENTATIONAL

Notes
- Nick recieves an invitation from Gatsby to one of his parties.
- As Nick arrives to the party, Nick accounts different rumours flying around about Gatsby.
- Gatsby's parties are described as luxourious and that he lives a decident lifestyle, Nick feels out of place.
- Nick accidently meets Gatsby as Gatsby approached Nick saying that he had seen him around before.
- Nick talks to the audeince about this is not the way he lives his life, although he's rich he wouldn't live such a decident lifestyle.
- Nick follows Daisy's advice and talks to Jordan.

How this chapter is told:

- Nicks opinion and other characters thoughts and rumours on Gatsby help build up to the climax of when we actually meet Gatsby. The use of the rumours help build up excitement and suspense to who this man is..

-  As Nick gives us his view on Gatsby's luxurious lifestyle, the reader understands the contrast between Gatsby's lifestyle and Nick's.

- Not only was the main intention of building up tension when meeting Gatsby, the other sub plot is when Nick actually meets Jordan and talks to her. Fritzlgald does this by using the dialouge of characters to help pusuade Nick.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 2

CHAPTER 2 - ORIENTATIONAL

What happens?

- Nick is invited to Daisy and Toms party.
- Daisy gets punched by Tom
- The audience realise what type of person is, he makes a racist remark and also shows that he beats women.
- Nick drives through the Valley of Ashes with Tom for the first time, Nick talks about how he see's a advertisement board with the giant eyes of T.J Eckleburg.

- Nick meets Myrtle, the person Tom is having a secret love affair with. He also meets Myrtle's wife George Wilson.

- First rumour about Gatsby from the McKee's who live downstairs to Myrtle and George Wilson, they said that Jay Gatsby is the nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilhelm, the ruler of Germany during World War I.

How the chapter is told:

- There is use of symbolism to help with the historical context of the novel. The eyes of TJ eckleburg represent god looking down on the valley of ashes and judging the moral decay of the 1920's, It could also symbolise the reader judging Tom in this case as he is having an affair and lives a criminal lifestyle.

- Purpose of the chapter is for the reader to understand what type of person Tom is, he is a racist and a women beater, Fritzlgald shows this through the actions of Tom punching Daisy and also through the dialouge when Nick is describing a book he likes, Tom interrupts and talks about a book related to white supremicy.

- During Daisy's party, Nick becomes more drunk and starts to express more opinions and emotions, this could show how unreliable Nick is as a narrator.

The Great Gatsby: Chapter 1

CHAPTER 1 - ABSTRACT/ORIENTATIONAL

- Introduced to the first person narrator, Nick Carraway.

- Nick gives a breif introduction about himself and what he believes in.

- Nick mentions that Gatsby represents everything he dislikes in a person, although he has never met him.

- Nick talks to the reader about his move to West Egg (the home of the newly rich) and how he is neighbours with Gatsby, an aparrent self acclaimed millionairre.

- Nick goes to West Egg (the home of inherited wealth) to have dinner with his cousin.

- At Daisy's house, Nick is introduced to Tom and Jordan, Nick gives his opinion on them.

How chapter 1 is told:

- The first chapter establishes the type of person Nick is, through the use of dialouge the reader understands Nicks opinion on other character such as Gatsby, Tom and Jordan. Nick describes himself as being a very tolerent and non judgemental however already he contradicts himself because he judges Tom as being a very arrogont man, this shows that maybe Nick is not a reliable character.

- The story is told in past tense, this is because it is Nicks point of view after all the events have happened.  This helps the reader understand Nicks opinions may have changed because of the actions, contradicting himself again.

- The reader is connected to the story through Nicks misleading judgements against other characters, why is he being so judgemental?

Example of how to start a question B paragraph

Opening to Robert browning

Example question: Write about the ways the 3 narrators talk about setting within the text.

Browning evokes powerful settings by describing them through the eyes of first person narrators. In My Last Duchess, The Laboratory and Pophyria's Lover setting is used to reflect the emotion of the character and to symbolise their beleifs. Looking into more depth into one of Brownings poems, Pophyria's lover, the voilent stormy weather reflects the writers own state of mind as he commits the murder.

Gives an example of 3 peoms from Robert Browning.

Goes into more depth about one of Robert Brownings poem.

Section B structure

Practice question: Write about the ways that writers aim to make the beginnings of their texts exciting. Refer to three texts you have studied.

Introduction:
-Name the 2 narrators you'll be talking about (Frost, Browning and Hosseini)
- (maybe) Add a sentance how all three narratives use the same technique to make the novel/poem interesting...

Paragraph 1:
